PhiDRIVE™ - direct diesel electric propulsion

ΦDRIVE™ - Direct diesel electric propulsion

M/F EIKSUND

Inpower’s patented ΦDRIVE™ represents a radical simplification compared with existing solutions for electrical vessel propulsion. Functioning extremely well with all types of prime mover, it features the smallest possible number of components.

Development of diesel-electric propulsion for ships has been driven by the need for a high degree of flexibility in terms of both hull utilisation and delivery to power consumers on board.

While existing solutions meet these requirements, they also involve very complex systems involving high capital investment and life-cycle costs as well as substantial fuel consumption.

Simple and reliable

The ΦDRIVE™ from Inpower is the world’s most efficient electric propulsion system for vessels. It is based on directly coupled, permanent magnet machines known to be the most efficient and reliable components on the market.

This technology has been widely applied in modern hybrid vehicles and in the automation industry.

Flexibility – better hull utilisation

Inpower’s ΦDRIVE™ combines permanent magnet machines directly between prime mover and propellor. Since a power cable is the only connection between prime mover and propellor, the ΦDRIVE™ provides better hull utilisasion than either conventional diesel-electric or mechanical systems.

Greater efficiency and power density

The ΦDRIVE™ is more efficient than today’s conventional diesel-electric propulsion systems. By reducing the use of power electronics and consequent energy loses, the drive achieves a substantial improvement in efficiency.

In addition, basing the system exclusively on the use of permanent magnet machines provides further efficiency gains as well as more compact installations compared with traditional diesel-electric machinery.

Greater efficiency and lower volume = improved power density.

The Inpower ΦDRIVE™ is flexible as a conventional diesel-electric system, while offering the same levels of efficiency, simplicity and robustness as a conventional diesel-mechanical system.
